Our Professional Psychiatric Services in California

Crossroads Institute’s psychiatry services take an individualized approach, tailoring our assessments and interventions directly to each patient’s needs.

What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses on the treatment and prevention of mental health disorders. Psychiatrists are medical doctors, making them qualified to diagnose and assess both the physical and mental components of a patient’s psychological conditions.

How Does Psychiatry Work?

Psychiatrists use a variety of treatments – including some forms of therapy and analysis, the administration of medications, and other treatments, including psychosocial interventions— to diagnose and address mental health conditions.

What is The Difference Between Psychotherapy and Psychiatry?

In psychotherapy, a therapist or psychologist focuses primarily on encouraging behavioral changes in individuals. As medical doctors, psychiatrists employ medical treatments, including prescription medications, in addition to therapeutic forms of intervention. These treatments can complement one another and are not mutually exclusive.

INITIAL EVALUATION

As a key initial step for our psychiatry services, the initial evaluation can involve scales, interviews, and more. A detailed evaluation allows our psychiatrists to determine your needs and tailor-fit a treatment plan for those needs.

Recommendations that result from the initial consultation may include other Crossroads services, including psychotherapy.

Medication Management

If a Crossroads Institute psychiatrist believes that medication will be beneficial to an individual’s condition, they may prescribe medication as part of a treatment plan. Medication is ultimately the choice of the patient; if a patient chooses to introduce medication as part of their treatment plan, they will also take part in ongoing medication management with their psychiatrist. Medication management is a collaborative process focused on monitoring the efficacy of medications and any potential side effects to ensure the best possible outcome for a patient.

Online Psychiatry Visits

Crossroads Institute also offers online psychiatry visits for those who prefer to have sessions in the comfort of their home. All Crossroads psychiatrists conduct online visits with the utmost attention to patient privacy, ensuring the safest and most supportive virtual environments possible.  Due to local regulations or conditions of insurance plans, prescribing certain medications may require the patient to be seen in person periodically.

Psychiatry FAQ

As medical doctors, psychiatrists can prescribe medication for the treatment of mental health conditions. Prescribing medication and engaging in ongoing medication management is a common part of psychiatric care and is typically done in tandem with analysis or therapy.

Psychiatry and psychotherapy are not mutually exclusive. In some scenarios, these forms of intervention can be used in tandem. Depending on an individual’s specific needs, a Crossroads psychiatrist may advise that an individual also take part in psychotherapy as part of their treatment plan.
